Lötschberg Base Tunnel (LBT), Switzerland

The Lötschberg Base Tunnel (LBT) is a 34.57 km long railway tunnel on the BLS Lötschbergbahn's Lötschberg Line cutting through the Alps of Switzerland some 400 m below the existing Lötschberg Tunnel. It runs between Frutigen, Berne and Raron, Valais. It is currently the world's longest land tunnel and accommodates passenger and freight trains. Full scale operation began in December 2007. Travel time between Visp and Spiez is about 28 minutes (about 16 minutes in the LBT). About 110 trains per day use the LBT, and 66 use the old mountain tunnel, because of the single track. Of the 110, 30 are passenger and 80 are freight, including both intermodal freight transport plus heavy freight trains. Heavy freight trains up to a maximum weight of 4,000 tons and a maximum length of 1,500 metres have to use the LBT, as they can't use the existing mountain track.
