The Three Gorges Dam is located in the Yiling District of Yichang, in Hubei province, China. It is a hydroelectric dam constructed over the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, It is the world’s largest hydropower project in terms of installed capacity (20,300 MW) but is second to Itaipu Dam with regards to the generation of electricity annually. Coupling the dam's thirty-two main turbines with two smaller generators (50 MW each) to power the plant itself, the total electric generating capacity of the dam will eventually reach 22,500 MW. As well as producing electricity, the dam increases the Yangtze River's shipping capacity, and reduces the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space. The Chinese government regards the project as a historic engineering, social and economic success, with the design of state-of-the-art large turbines, and a move toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions. The dam has been a controversial topic both in China and abroad. The dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites causing significant ecological changes, including an increased risk of landslides. The massive project sets records for number of people displaced (more than 1.2 million), number of cities and towns flooded (13 cities, 140 towns, 1,350 villages), and length of reservoir (more than 600 kilometers).
